Thousands of people lost their lives According to information, 40 tonnes of Methyl Isocyanide (MIC) poisonous gas leaked from the Bhopal-based Union Carbide factory that night, causing havoc in Bhopal and its surrounding areas for 3 days.  The then government of Madhya Pradesh is said to have confirmed 3787 people as gas victims, while other reports put the death toll at 8000.
